As an instructor of English as a second language, I believe that the best way to learn a language is to live in a country where that language is spoken. It is important to learn the basics of grammar and vocabulary in a formal classroom setting, but being able to have natural, hands-on use of the language is also key.
During the week, the students accompany me as I do my grocery shopping and go about my daily activities. This is one of the most important ways of learning the basics in English and it also allows students to interact with Canadians. The people on the island are very friendly and usually strike up a conversation with people they meet in line at the groceries or walking on the road! Most students don't know how to start a conversation with a stranger in public. This is an effective way of helping the students to learn about Canada and Canadians. Learn by going out and interacting!
Most of the basics are taught in the class lessons. Students learn grammar, vocabulary, idioms, phrasal verbs, reading, listening and writing. The biggest test to seeing whether their studies are useful is if they can incorporate what they have learned and produce the language in conversation. The best way to learn the language is by living in a country where that language is spoken.
Fall is the perfect time for hiking and sightseeing since the colours of the leaves are spectacular.
Students may also travel to Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, and central Ontario. I will assist them in all their travel needs, from finding accommodation during their travels in Canada, to booking transportation. Students will be able to go on short day trips around the island as well as weekend trips to Toronto.
During the warmer months, I encourage the students to go on small day trips.
They can:
·
Laze around on the white sand beaches
·
Swim in the fresh, crystal clear blue waters of one of the many lakes on the island
·
Go fishing for trout, salmon, pickerel
·
Go hiking on one of the island’s many hiking trails
· Learn about wildlife and edible plant life
·
Visit the island’s lighthouses
·
Shop for Native Art
·
Take a stroll by the Bridal Veil Falls
·
Visit the Carter Bay sand dunes
We have a few rooms that are devoted to hosting ESL students. The common areas are open concept, living room, dining room, and kitchen. Students will be living and interacting with the family throughout the day.
We have a beautiful, large working farm property with open fields and hardwood forest (suitable for hiking and camping). Students can also get a taste of what it is like to live in a country setting. They can learn about life on the farm and get some exposure to what they may not have otherwise received. What a unique experience! Our property is ideal for summer BBQ parties, marshmallow roasts, and bonfires. I provide all meals for the students and I assist them with English. I also provide introductions into all of the various cultures of Canada. Students can learn about the history and culture of Canada’s First Nations People as well as indigenous animal and plant life on the island.
